In Japan, Daruma dolls are easily toppled but then spring back right up. A common inscription on Daruma paintings is “seven times down, eight times up,” symbolizing Daruma’s indomitable spirit. You can’t knock it out. Firmly settled in Zen meditation, nothing can faze or disturb this little Daruma.
