The single character MU (“no,” “no thing,” “not that”) is the most common one-word barrier in Zenga. MU has been the central koan in Zen from the time of the 8th century Chinese Zen master Jōshū. There is a saying that you must “Struggle with MU for 30 years!” This MU calligraphy is dynamic and creative, both a Zenga and a work of contemporary art.
